Patriot air defense systems remain effective against Russian ballistic missiles, despite the use of decoys and trajectory-shifting technology, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

In a statement to ukrainian media Babel on May 27, Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat confirmed that Ukrainian forces recently intercepted six out of nine Russian ballistic missiles. He noted that while Russian missiles now shift laterally during their descent, complicating interception, the Patriot system continues to perform effectively.

According to Ihnat, when a ballistic missile is launched, the Patriot system automatically calculates its flight trajectory and the interception point. However, Russian missiles have recently begun to deviate laterally during their descent, complicating the system’s targeting.

The system calculates missile trajectories and intercept points automatically, maintaining Ukraine’s defense against one of the most complex threats in Russia’s arsenal.

Earlier, Ukraine had extended investment opportunities to Raytheon, the US defense contractor that manufactures the Patriot missile system, and is pursuing expanded cooperation with other American defense firms.

The initiative comes amid Ukraine’s pressing need for additional Patriot systems and interceptors to defend civilians and critical infrastructure against continued Russian missile and drone strikes.
