Poland And NATO to Discuss Missile Interception Over Ukraine at Upcoming Meeting
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that the issue of intercepting missiles over Ukrainian airspace by NATO member countries might be raised at the upcoming ministerial meeting.
Sikorski made this announcement during a broadcast on TVN24, highlighting that discussions on the possibility of destroying missiles outside Ukrainian territory should be viewed within the framework of self-defense.
“Next week, there will be another NATO ministerial meeting, and this issue may be brought up,” Sikorski said on TVN24.
He also addressed relations with Ukraine and commented on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s request for the potential interception of Russian missiles heading toward Poland before they cross the border.
“Do we have the right to shoot down such a missile only when it is over our territory? In that case, there is no doubt, but risks can arise, as seen in Przewodów, where missile debris caused damage, injuries, and even fatalities,” Sikorski explained.
He added that there might be differing perspectives on Ukraine’s request, making it an issue that requires discussion and consensus among allies. According to him, this topic could be included on the agenda of next week’s NATO meeting.
Poland has been considering intercepting Russian missiles over Ukraine, a topic that has gained attention since early 2024. In July 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a security cooperation agreement, including potential missile interception.
