Poland and Sweden Conduct First Joint Short-Notice Drill in Baltic Sea

Poland and Sweden on September 22 began their first bilateral short-notice military exercise, SNEX “Gotland Sentry,” aimed at demonstrating rapid joint deployment and improving collective defense procedures in the Baltic Sea region.
“Poland and Sweden together for the security of the Baltic Sea. We’re launching the SNEX Gotland Sentry, the first ever such joint action by Poland and Sweden,” Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X, adding that the drill stems from a defense-cooperation accord signed on September 2
The exercise follows a letter of intent signed on September 2 in Warsaw by Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and his Swedish counterpart Pål Jonson. The agreement outlined closer defense cooperation, including joint Baltic Sea operations and expanded collaboration in defense technologies.

According to Poland’s Operational Command, the drill is intended “to demonstrate the ability of the Polish and Swedish armed forces to rapidly deploy selected components by air, sea and land, as well as to improve collective defense procedures.”
National and regional media emphasized that the exercise is the first of its kind, designed as a short-notice readiness test requiring participating forces to operate with minimal preparation time—a framework meant to stress real-world responsiveness.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia deployed Iskander-M missile systems in the Kaliningrad region during large-scale drills, placing parts of Poland and southern Sweden within potential range.
