Poland raised $300,000 in a day and a half to purchase an armored medical evacuation vehicle for Ukraine.

Polish journalist and sociologist Sławomir Sierakowski told Radio Svoboda on March 12. The fundraising campaign was launched by Sierakowski and American historian Timothy Snyder on an online platform following discussions at the Munich Security Conference about Ukraine’s urgent needs.

According to Sierakowski, Ukraine’s United24 platform identified armored evacuation vehicles as a priority, prompting the initiative. More than 11,000 people contributed, with donations ranging from 20 zlotys to 6,000.

While the majority of donors were Polish, Ukrainians also participated, many leaving messages of support.

“The pace of this collection shows that the silent pro-Ukrainian majority in Poland has responded. It understands the situation, does not want Ukraine to be defeated, and wants to save the lives of Ukrainians. And those who shout that Poles are skeptical about Ukraine are a minority, but they are sometimes loud,” Sierakowski said.

The funds will be transferred to Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, which will oversee the purchase. Due to the success of the campaign, organizers have extended the effort to fund another medevac.

Sierakowski is known for a 2022 fundraiser that collected 25 million zlotys for a Bayraktar drone for Ukraine. Upon learning of the initiative, the manufacturer donated the drone, and the funds were redirected to other Ukrainian needs.

Poland remains a key supporter of Ukraine, providing military and humanitarian aid and serving as a crucial logistics hub for Western arms shipments. However, tensions between the countries have arisen over economic issues, including Ukrainian grain exports, and historical disputes.

Earlier, Poland’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration announced plans to distribute a crisis preparedness guide to all households by the end of the year.
