Pro-EU Victory: Maia Sandu’s PAS Party Dominates Moldova’s Parliament Elections

Moldova’s pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), led by President Maia Sandu, has emerged as the leading force in the parliamentary elections, with support from the country’s diaspora in Europe securing the ruling party 52 seats and the ability to form a government independently.
According to European Pravda on September 29, after counting about 95% of protocols from polling stations, PAS has gained more than 47.5% of the vote — a number that continues to grow. The ongoing tally includes ballots cast by Moldovan citizens living abroad, who voted later than residents inside the country. Among Moldovans living in European states, there is a convincing majority in favor of PAS, the outlet notes.
Moldova applies a relatively high electoral threshold: 5% for individual parties and 7% for political blocs. Votes cast for those who failed to overcome the barrier are redistributed among the winners. “Thanks to this redistribution, PAS has already guaranteed itself 52 seats in the parliament of the new convocation,” European Pravda reported. This figure may still increase further if PAS’s overall share of the vote continues to climb.

The Moldovan parliament is composed of 101 deputies, meaning PAS—the party of President Sandu—has secured an outright majority and will be able to form a government without entering a coalition with other political forces.
The pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc, led by former president Igor Dodon, has received less than 26% of the vote and is expected to win around 28 seats. In third place is the Alternative bloc with just under 8.5% of the vote and 9 seats. Two other parties have also passed into parliament: the formally pro-Romanian “Democracy at Home,” accused of having ties to Russia’s FSB, and the populist “Our Party” led by Renato Usatîi. Both are projected to secure 6 seats each.
European Pravda highlights that PAS currently holds more votes than the combined tally of all other parties that managed to pass the electoral threshold. However, the final allocation of mandates will be officially announced by Moldova’s Central Election Commission.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia was intensifying its interference ahead of parliamentary elections in Moldova.
