Pro-European Candidate Nicușor Dan Wins Romanian Election Despite Russian Interference

Romania has accused Russia of attempting to interfere in its presidential election, while the second round of voting that resulted in a victory for pro-European candidate and Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan.
“During Romania’s ongoing presidential elections yet again we see the hallmarks of Russian interference,” Andrei Țărnea, spokesperson for the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote on X on May 18.
“A viral campaign of fake news on Telegram and other social media platforms is aimed to influence the electoral process. This was expected and Romanian authorities debunked the fake news.”

Meanwhile, Nicușor Dan secured 53.6% of the vote, defeating far-right, pro-Russian candidate George Simion, who received 46.4%, according to official results after 100% of precincts were counted.
Dan stated continued military support for Ukraine is vital not only for Kyiv, but for Romania’s national security. In an interview with Reuters on April, 24 Dan underscored that the outcome of the war in Ukraine directly affects both Romania and neighboring Moldova.
Simion, the leader of the ultranationalist AUR party , has been banned from entering both Ukraine and Moldova due to national security concerns.
Previously, the National Research Institute of Poland said in a statement released on May 14 that foreign-funded political advertisements on Facebook appear to be part of an attempt to interfere in Poland’s upcoming presidential election.
