Putin Acts in Russia’s National Interest, Kremlin Responds to Trump’s Criticism

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to US President Donald Trump’s remark that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was “playing with fire” by refusing ceasefire talks with Ukraine, stating that Putin is acting in line with Russia’s national interests.
During a conference call with reporters on May 28, Peskov added that any potential meeting between Putin, Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should occur only after adequate preparations and preliminary discussions.
In a post on Truth Social on May 27, Trump condemned Putin over continued attacks on Ukraine, warning that the Kremlin leader is “playing with fire.”
On May 28, it was reported that Putin is not prepared to end the war against Ukraine at any cost and is instead pushing for sweeping geopolitical concessions, including a written guarantee barring NATO expansion.
Peace talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul on May 16 ended after just two hours. It followed Russia’s demand for the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from all territories claimed by the Kremlin, including the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, as a precondition for any ceasefire agreement.
