Putin Addresses US Greenland Plans and Showcases Russia’s Naval Power With New Nuclear Submarine

On March 27, Russian leader Vladimir Putin spoke at the plenary session of the VI International Arctic Forum “Arctic – Territory of Dialogue”, noting the US’s interests in Greenland and cautioning against underestimating their significance.
“It is enough to mention—everyone is well aware—of the United States’ plans regarding Greenland. But you know, this may only at first glance surprise some, and it is deeply mistaken to believe that this is just extravagant talk by the new American administration. Not at all,” Putin stated.
On the same day, he visited the naval fleet, attending the launch ceremony of the nuclear-powered submarine cruiser Perm. The vessel is set to become the first standard carrier of the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile, reinforcing Russia’s maritime capabilities.

“These submarines and warships will strengthen all our fleets, enhance the security of Russia’s maritime borders, and ensure the protection of national interests in different regions of the world’s oceans,” Putin said.
Following the ceremony, he toured the Arkhangelsk submarine and was briefed at the Maritime Operations Headquarters on securing the Northern Sea Route.
The discussion highlighted the ongoing efforts of Russia’s icebreaker fleet in maintaining safe passage through Arctic waters.
Earlier, it was reported that Vladimir Putin stated at the International Arctic Forum that the strategic importance of the Arctic is increasing globally and said that geopolitical rivalry in the region is intensifying, emphasizing that Russia would continue to strengthen its military presence in the Far North.
