Radiation Level Concerns in Zaporizhzhia After Wind Shifts from Occupied Territory

On July 29, Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for the Study of Occupation, has raised concerns over a potential rise in background radiation in Zaporizhzhia.
In a video shared on social media, Andriushchenko showed a handheld device measuring radiation levels in the air. The reading was taken in the area of the small market in Zaporizhzhia at around 7:00 p.m. Kyiv time.

According to Andriushchenko, the spike appeared when the wind shifted from the direction of Russian-occupied territory.
“Zaporizhzhia, small market district, 19:00. As the wind blew, the radiation level increased. The wind was coming from the occupied territory,” he wrote.
While cautioning against panic, Andriushchenko emphasized the need for official comment.

“I don’t want to stir fear or panic, but this definitely requires attention and clarification. Especially given that for the past few days, Russian sources have been intensifying rhetoric about alleged strikes, fires, and incidents at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.”
Previously, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, German Galushchenko, reported that a Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure had caused a complete blackout at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
