Russia launched more drones on Ukraine in July 2025 than during nearly the entire previous year, signaling a continued escalation in aerial operations.

In a post on X dated July 31, open-source intelligence analyst Kyle Glen reported: “The total number of ‘Shahed’ and ‘Gerbera’ decoys launched into Ukraine in July stood at 6,297, an increase of 1,378% compared to July 2024 (426 launched).”

He noted that Russia had not used this many drones within such a short period before.

“Last year, this number of drones was launched between January and October,” Glen wrote.

In June 2025, Russia exceeded the 5,000-drone mark for the first time. July now sets a new record—the first time over 6,000 drones have been launched in a single month.

Glen also observed periods of reduced activity in July, which he attributed to weather conditions.

“There were times of relative quiet this month, likely due to poor weather,” he stated.

“Russia’s drone capabilities have significantly increased in late 2024 and into 2025,” Glen concluded.

Ukrainian Air Force officials stated that from April to June, around 15% of Russian drones managed to reach their targets—a sharp increase compared to just 5% in the first quarter of the year.

On July 31, it was reported that at least 15 people, including a six-year-old boy, were killed following a large-scale Russian drones and missile attack on Kyiv.
