Rheinmetall Signs $292M Deal to Integrate Czech Industry Into Leopard Tank Support Network

German defense giant Rheinmetall will bring Czech industry into the long-term maintenance and servicing of Leopard 2A4 tanks, the Czech Ministry of Defense announced on July 23.
Under a new seven-year contract, Rheinmetall will gradually transfer key technical support functions from the manufacturer to the Czech Army’s logistics units.
The total value of the comprehensive service agreement is capped at 6.16 billion Czech crowns (approximately $292 million), excluding VAT. The ministry noted, however, that this figure represents a maximum threshold; actual spending will depend on operational needs and usage over time.
The framework deal goes beyond routine maintenance and repair—it also covers spare parts deliveries, including a starter package to ensure the availability of critical components for several years.
The contract also includes training programs, logistics, and after-sales support, mobile infrastructure, and simulation technologies. Full execution of the agreement is expected later this summer.
The move is part of the Czech sweeping rearmament effort aimed at modernizing its armored forces and aligning more closely with NATO standards.
The Leopard 2A4 tanks are already being delivered to the 73rd Tank Battalion, which is set to become a fully NATO-standardized unit in terms of both equipment and combat readiness.
Earlier, Czechia officially delivered the last of its operable T-72M1 tanks to Ukraine, marking the end of their service within the Czech Army.
The final shipment of approximately 20 tanks was transferred in late March and early April 2025. These units had previously belonged to Czechia’s 73rd Tank Battalion, which now awaits delivery of modern Leopard 2 tanks from Germany to replenish its armored capabilities.
