Romania plans to quickly establish a domestic production line for defensive drones in collaboration with Ukraine, Foreign Minister Oana Toiu told Reuters on October 1.

The initiative aims to enhance air defense capabilities for Romania, the European Union, and NATO allies, particularly in light of recent Russian airspace violations.

Toiu emphasized that Romania sees this project as a strategic step to bolster the eastern flank of NATO, focusing on developing a “drone wall” to protect the region against unmanned aircraft from Russia, Reuters writes.

Talks with Ukraine on the matter started prior to recent escalations, including Russian incursions into Estonian airspace and NATO jets shooting down drones over Poland.

Meanwhile, Romania has also approved an increase in US troop presence to support Middle East refueling operations and strengthen regional security. The country plans significant investment in its Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base to accommodate up to 10,000 troops, according to Reuters.

Previously, it was reported that US President Donald Trump believed NATO countries should shoot down Russian military aircraft if they enter their airspace.
