Romania Scrambles 4 Fighter Jets Amid Russian Drone Attack Targeting Ukraine
On the night of October 2, in Romania's border area with Ukraine, over the Danube river, authorities triggered an air raid alert and scrambled fighter jets due to a Russian drone attack targeting southern Odesa.
This was reported by Romanian media Digi24.
Emergency services reported that at around 2:40 a.m. local time on October 2, a RO-Alert notification was issued for the northern part of Tulcea County after military units detected the movement of Russian drones heading toward targets in Ukraine near the Romanian border.
The Ministry of Defense stated that two Spanish F-18 fighter jets, stationed at an airbase in Romania, along with two Romanian F-16s, were deployed for monitoring purposes.
Surveillance systems did not detect any "Shahed" drones entering Romanian airspace.
On September 27, debris from a "Shahed" attack drone was found once again in a Romanian community located across the Danube from the Ukrainian city of Izmail.
Since September 29, NATO has enhanced its airspace monitoring over Romania, deploying an additional Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft to the region.
