The Romanian Senate Defense Committee may discuss legislative changes that would allow the military to shoot down drones violating the country’s airspace.

This was reported by the Romanian news agency Agerpres.

At the Senate committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, representatives from Romania’s Ministry of National Defense will be present. Parliamentary sources told Agerpres that one of the meeting’s topics will be the analysis of legislative changes to permit the military to destroy drones entering Romanian territory.

On the night of Sunday, September 8, at least two Russian "Shaheds" entered Romanian airspace during Russia’s aerial attack on Ukraine. Debris from one of the drones was found the previous day in Tulcea, and earlier on July 25, the Foreign Minister of Romania, Luminița Odobescu, confirmed that the remains of the drones were found on the territory of her country following Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Romanian Prime Minister Ion-Marcel Ciolacu stated that Romania responded in real time and monitored the situation using F-16 fighter jets, noting that these drones were not aimed at Romanian territory.

On August 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has directed diplomats to engage within the framework of the Ukraine-NATO Council to explore the potential of forming a coalition of neighboring countries that would assist in intercepting Russian missiles over Ukrainian airspace.
