On December 6, just two days before the presidential election's second round, Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the first-round results, where pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu had secured first place.

This was reported by Euronews România.

The court explained its decision by citing its constitutional duty to "ensure compliance with the presidential election procedure and validate the voting results."

Former constitutional prosecutor Liviu Drăgănescu elaborated, stating: "Information received from the National Security Council indicates both state and non-state interference in Romania's electoral process."

According to the agency, the judges of Romania's Constitutional Court, during an informal five-hour session, reviewed all documents transmitted and declassified by the Supreme Council of National Defence of Romania and determined that the voting process was deeply flawed.

The annulment of the elections will become official upon the publication of the Court's decision, expected later this evening. A new date will be scheduled to hold a rerun of the first round.

“The electoral process to elect Romania’s president will be fully rerun, and the government will set a new date and […] calendar for the necessary steps,” the Constitutional Court said in a statement.

Earlier, declassified documents from Romanian security services indicated that Georgescu received extensive promotion on TikTok via coordinated accounts, recommendation algorithms, and paid advertisements.

Additionally, the document noted that Romania has been the target of “aggressive hybrid attacks from Russia.” Moscow, however, denies any involvement in the country’s election campaigns.
