Rubio and Lavrov Discuss Putin-Trump Agreements Ahead of Istanbul Peace Talks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov presented Moscow’s "specific proposals" for the next round of peace talks with Ukraine during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 28, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The conversation followed Russia's proposal to hold negotiations in Istanbul on June 2, building on the first round of talks held on May 16. The Ministry also noted that Lavrov briefed Rubio on the implementation of the May 19 agreements between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
In his call with Lavrov, Rubio emphasized Trump’s “intention to quickly bring the Ukraine conflict to an end” and reiterated Washington’s readiness to assist both sides in narrowing their differences, according to the Russian readout.

During the phone call with President Trump on May 19, Putin had once again rejected a ceasefire and reiterated maximalist demands but expressed a willingness to negotiate a "memorandum regarding a potential future peace treaty."
Speaking to reporters at the White House on May 28, Trump said it will take about “a week and a half to two weeks” to determine whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin is genuinely committed to ending the war in Ukraine.
Earlier on May 28, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who is leading Ukraine’s delegation in negotiations with Russia, submitted a formal document outlining Ukraine’s position and is now awaiting a response from the Russian side.
