U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that violations of a potential ceasefire in Ukraine would be difficult to conceal, citing the availability of surveillance technology such as satellites.
Speaking to reporters in Ireland on March 11, following talks with the Ukrainian delegation in Jeddah, Rubio emphasized that modern warfare makes tracking violations easier than ever.
“There are a lot of observers on the ground, as well as all kinds of aerial ones, [such as] commercial satellites and the like,” he said when asked how a ceasefire could be enforced.
“It will be quite difficult to hide a drone strike. It will be difficult to hide missile strikes, ballistic strikes, artillery strikes. Therefore, we believe that this is something that can be monitored,” he added.
The remarks come after Ukraine and the United States held negotiations in Saudi Arabia on March 11, during which Kyiv agreed to an immediate 30-day truce, contingent on Russia taking the same step.
In return, the Trump administration has pledged to resume military aid to Ukraine and reinstate intelligence-sharing.
