The Kremlin is currently reviewing a U.S.-brokered proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which Kyiv has already agreed to, according to Forbes on March 12.

The proposal, announced on March 11, was discussed during a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with U.S. officials indicating that the decision now rests with Moscow.

The proposed ceasefire could be extended if both Ukraine and Russia agree to additional conditions, as outlined in a joint statement issued by U.S. and Ukrainian officials following the Jeddah talks. The U.S. also committed to lifting its pause on intelligence sharing and security assistance for Ukraine. This move follows the White House’s decision last week to suspend intelligence support related to Ukrainian strikes within Russian territory.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on March 11 that the U.S. had presented the ceasefire offer to Russia and was awaiting a response. “We’ll take this offer now to the Russians and we hope that they’ll say yes… the ball is now in their court,” he said.

Additionally, Washington and Kyiv have agreed to accelerate negotiations on a mineral deal that was delayed last month after a high-profile dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. The dispute led to the Trump administration pausing military aid to Ukraine.

Russia has not yet formally accepted the proposal. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on March 12 that Moscow is reviewing the details of the U.S.-Ukraine joint statement.

“We are examining the statements made following the negotiations carefully, and we are getting acquainted with the text of the joint statement adopted in Jeddah,” Peskov said. He added that Russian officials expect to receive further details through diplomatic channels before making a decision.

When asked whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin would hold direct talks with Trump regarding the ceasefire, Peskov stated that such a conversation could be arranged quickly if necessary. “We also do not rule out that the topic of a call at the highest level may arise. If such a need emerges, it will be organized very quickly,” he noted.

The specific details of the ceasefire agreement, including any concessions required from either Ukraine or Russia, remain undisclosed.

Earlier, Ukrainian Presidential Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak confirmed that ceasefire talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia are set to begin next week, between March 17 and 23. Following negotiations in Jeddah, Yermak stated that technical teams will start discussions on the details of a proposed 30-day ceasefire.
