U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he expects to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin this week, expressing optimism about securing a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, according to Reuters on March 11.

His comments follow Ukraine’s decision to accept a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire during talks between American and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.

“It takes two to tango,” Trump said, emphasizing that Russia must also agree to the plan proposed by U.S. and Ukrainian officials. “I hope to have a total ceasefire in the coming days.”

Trump also confirmed that he would invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy back to the White House, reaffirming U.S. efforts to end the war. “We want to get the Ukraine war over with,” he said.

He added that further talks were planned with Russian representatives later in the day and the following day.

“We're going to meet with them later on today and tomorrow, and hopefully, we'll be able to wipe out a deal. But I think the ceasefire is very important. If we can get Russia to do it, that'll be great. If we can't, we just keep going on and people are going to get killed, lots of people,” Trump warned.

On March 11, Ukraine expressed its readiness to consider a U.S.-proposed 30-day temporary ceasefire, which could be extended by mutual agreement if Russia also agrees and implements the terms simultaneously.
