Russian companies Red Soft and Passion are developing Molniya, a new messenger positioned as a business-focused super-app combining communications, payments and cross-border trade tools on a single platform, according to the Rambler on December 4.

The service is being built as a multifunctional environment where users will be able to exchange messages, run social feeds, watch short videos and streams, make payments and use an integrated marketplace.

The project is promoted as an alternative to Western platforms and Russia’s planned national messenger Max.

According to information cited by the Rambler, Molniya is designed as a super-app that merges messenger functions, social networking and an online marketplace.

It targets both individual users and businesses involved in international operations, particularly those with operations in China.

The application will utilize encryption that complies with the Russian GOST-2021 standard, with user data stored on servers located in Moscow and Novosibirsk.

Support for Russia’s Faster Payments System and integration with Chinese payment services, such as WeChat Pay and Alipay, are intended to facilitate peer-to-peer transfers in rubles and cross-border payments for corporate clients.

Earlier, it was reported that Russian authorities carried out a nationwide test blocking Telegram and WhatsApp as a rehearsal for banning foreign messengers, following the passage of laws to establish an FSB-supervised “sovereign messenger” to replace them in official and public communications.
