Russian forces carried out airstrikes on the Bilopillia community in Ukraine’s Sumy region, despite Moscow’s claim of a temporary “ceasefire,” according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) on May 8.

According to SES, one civilian home was destroyed in the strike, and three more houses and seven auxiliary buildings sustained damage.

“On-site, emergency workers discovered a woman trapped under the debris. She was carefully rescued and handed over to emergency medical personnel,” SES reported.

In a separate overnight incident in the Sumy district, Russian shelling sparked fires in three civilian homes. One person was killed.

Russia had previously declared a unilateral “ceasefire” to mark the May 9 Victory Day holiday.

However, Ukrainian officials and residents have widely dismissed the gesture as propaganda, citing continued attacks across the country.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s stance on the ongoing war, noting that the offer to halt strikes and hold a ceasefire for at least 30 days remains available.

“We are not withdrawing this offer, which could provide an opportunity for diplomacy,” Zelenskyy said.

However, Zelenskyy pointed out the lack of response from Russia, noting, “But from Russia, the world sees no answer—no answer except for new strikes. This makes it crystal clear to everyone who is the source of the war.”
