Russia Expands Forces in Ukraine by Risking Its Own Borders, Zelenskyy Warns

Russia is expanding its military presence in Ukraine by deploying troops from its strategic reserves, and the move carries risks for Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on April 10.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces are eliminating roughly as many Russian troops each month as Russia is able to mobilize, yet the overall size of Russian forces in Ukraine continues to grow.

“We believe they are increasing their force by bringing in troops from the strategic reserve,” he said.
Zelenskyy added that the issue had been discussed with Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov, focusing on how to counter the buildup.

“We believe this is a risky step for the Russians, because by doing this they are weakening their borders with other states, and the situation there is difficult for them. But they went ahead with it anyway,” the President said.
He also noted that Ukrainian officials had recently reviewed updated Russian military planning maps together with Syrskyi and Hnatov.

“They want to capture Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, and Pokrovsk by the end of April. That is impossible, but this is not the first time they have set such deadlines for themselves,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that Ukraine maintains close coordination with British intelligence, which also does not see realistic conditions for Russia to achieve those objectives.
“I have already spoken about meetings with British intelligence. We have a trusting relationship with them. They also do not see the Russians having the capability to do this,” he said.

Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin would have to sacrifice between 300,000 and 1 million lives to fully occupy the “Donbas ” region.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine will not withdraw its troops from the region.
According to Zelenskyy, Putin is facing massive losses and struggling to find enough well-trained troops on the battlefield.
The Ukrainian President suggested that Putin is seeking a way to present the situation as a victory and is therefore attempting to push Ukraine out of Donbas through diplomatic means, particularly through dialogue with the United States.
