Russia Launches Nationwide Drone Training in Schools as Part of Military Expansion Strategy

Russia is embedding drone training into its national education system, with courses already launched in more than 500 schools and 30 colleges equipped with practical training centers.
This was reported by the UK Ministry of Defense via X on August 20.
According to the ministry, over 2,500 teachers have been trained to deliver these programs. The initiative stems from a plan announced in May 2024 by Education Minister Valery Falkov, who pledged to prepare one million drone specialists by 2030.

The move aligns with Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s June announcement that Russia is creating a separate branch of unmanned systems within its armed forces. This, the UK MoD noted, underscores the Kremlin’s strategic intent to expand autonomous technologies and weave them into military doctrine.
British intelligence assessed that the expansion of drone education reflects the ongoing militarization of Russian society through its schools. Experts stress that the surge in UAV training is directly tied to Russia’s war against Ukraine, as Moscow incorporates battlefield lessons into its strategy and seeks to dramatically scale up drone deployment.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia will launch a pilot kindergarten program for children aged 3 to 7, combining lessons in history, culture, and patriotism with an emphasis on promoting so-called “traditional values.” The initiative is set to be expanded nationwide by the end of the year.
