Russia Lost 240,000 Troops in Just Seven Months, Says UK Defence Minister

Russia has suffered 240,000 military casualties—killed and wounded—since the beginning of 2025, according to British Defense Secretary John Healey, cited by the Ukrainian defense media outlet Militarnyi on July 22.
Speaking at the latest Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) meeting, Healey said: “The number of Russian soldiers killed or wounded since the start of the full-scale invasion has surpassed 1,000,000. Since the beginning of this year alone—240,000 casualties.”
The estimate broadly aligns with figures from Ukraine’s General Staff, which reports that between January 1 and July 21, 2025, Russian forces have suffered 252,360 killed or wounded.

American intelligence puts the number of Russian soldiers killed in 2025 at 100,000. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited the figure during a July 10 press conference following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“It’s important to note that since just January of this year, Russia has lost 100,000 soldiers—killed, not wounded—killed,” Rubio stated.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte echoed the same estimate during a July 14 meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Earlier, reports emerged that Russia’s 41st Combined Arms Army suffered catastrophic losses in Ukraine, with half its troops either killed or missing and the other half either deserted or criminally prosecuted, according to internal documents.
