Russia Regroups Troops to Prepare Major New Offensive, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Warns

Russia is regrouping its units and focusing on several axes to prepare fresh offensive operations, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, told RBC-Ukraine in an interview published on August 18.
“The situation on the front is indeed difficult. It is characterized by the continuation of Russia’s strategic offensive operation,” Syrskyi said.
He identified two main directions where Russian forces are concentrating. “The Pokrovsk direction [Donetsk region] remains decisive for the Russians. And now the enemy is transferring its units from the Sumy axis to the Zaporizhzhia axis. This will be the second direction where the enemy plans to launch active offensive actions,” he explained.
On the Zaporizhzhia front, Syrskyi noted that combat remains of low intensity for now.
“But in implementing Putin’s objectives, the occupiers are trying to deliver there a powerful strike that had been planned since last year. You remember, it was the Kursk operation that disrupted their plans,” he said.
Syrskyi stated that Russia’s goal in Zaporizhzhia is “to break through our defenses and advance deep into the territory. Their aim, of course, is the whole region.”
The Commander-in-Chief also pointed to other directions where Russian activity continues. “Likely, there will also be action on the Novopavlivka axis [Donetsk region]. And active operations are ongoing on the Lyman axis—there the Russians are also trying to achieve success, though the scale of fighting is smaller,” he said.
Earlier, it was reported that over July, the Ukrainian Armed Forces eliminated more than 33,220 Russian troops, as announced by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
