Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a high-level meeting to prepare for the exchange of 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war currently held by Russia.

“The agreement to release 1,000 of our people from Russian captivity was perhaps the only tangible result of the meeting in Türkiye. We are working to ensure that this result is achieved,” Zelenskyy wrote on his account on X on May 22.

He noted that participants at the meeting provided updates on contacts with the Russian side. According to Zelenskyy, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is overseeing the organization and implementation of the agreement.

“We are clarifying the details for each individual included on the lists submitted by the Russian side,” Zelenskyy said.

“Returning all of our people from Russian captivity is one of Ukraine’s key objectives. I am grateful to everyone who is contributing to this effort.”

On May 19, Zelenskyy wrote that the most significant outcome of recent negotiations in Türkiye, between Ukraine and Russia, is a major agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war on each side.
