Finland’s President, Alexander Stubb, stated that "technical" negotiations between Ukraine and Russia could resume next week in the Vatican. This was reported by Finnish broadcasting company YLE on May 21.

Stubb also emphasized that the United States has not stepped back from its role as a mediator in the talks.

“They haven’t withdrawn. There are now more mediators. Previously, only the United States played this role, but now Europe is also involved,” he said.

Stubb sees the situation positively, noting that Europe has long hoped to be involved in discussions about a ceasefire and potential peace in Ukraine.

Pope Leo XIV has affirmed the Vatican's willingness to host the next round of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, according to a statement from the Italian government on May 20.

The offer came after a phone call between the Pope and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who had previously spoken with US President Donald Trump and several European leaders.

Previously on May 19, US President Donald Trump announced that his two-hour phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin went “very well” and that Russia and Ukraine would immediately begin negotiations toward a ceasefire and an end to the war.
