UK Expands Sanctions on Russia, Citing Threats to Ukraine and Global Security

The United Kingdom has unveiled a new package of sanctions against Russia, blacklisting over 100 entities and individuals connected to Moscow’s military-industrial complex, financial system, and state-sponsored disinformation efforts.
The announcement was published on the official UK government website on May 20.
The latest measures target supply chains supporting Russian weapons production, including components for Iskander missile systems, and add 18 vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” to the sanctions list.
Among those sanctioned is UK national John Michael Ormerod, accused of procuring ships for Russia’s shadow fleet, along with two Russian tanker captains involved in covert oil shipments.

The UK also imposed restrictions on 46 financial institutions that help the Kremlin circumvent existing sanctions. These include the St. Petersburg Exchange and the Russian Deposit Insurance Agency, both instrumental in maintaining Russia’s wartime economy.
Additionally, 14 individuals tied to the Kremlin-funded Agency for Social Engineering were sanctioned for spreading disinformation aimed at destabilizing democracies and undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Earlier, the UK had imposed sanctions on 10 vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
According to the official statement, the targeted ships are described as “high-volume offenders,” operating continuously to maximize the transport of Russian oil. As a result of the sanctions, these vessels are now banned from entering UK ports and will be denied access to the UK Ship Register.
