On September 11, the UK imposed sanctions on 10 vessels linked to Russia’s “shadow fleet ”.

This was reported in a press release by the UK government.

“Today’s action will directly target vessels in Putin’s ‘shadow fleet’, used by Russia as a desperate attempt to undermine UK and G7 sanctions and continue unfettered trade in Russian oil,” stated the press release.

According to the statement, the targeted ships are all “high-volume offenders”, vessels operating around the clock to transport as much Russian oil as possible. These ships will now be barred from entering UK ports and will be refused access to the UK Ship Register.

Just 3 of the vessels targeted today, Nikolay Zuyev (IMO 9610781), Ns Asia (IMO 9413561), and Zaliv Aniva (IMO 9418494), have collectively carried more than $5 billion worth of Russian oil since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale of Ukraine.

Today's announcement increases the total number of sanctioned “shadow fleet” ships by the UK to 25.

On September 10, Bloomberg reported that tankers from Russia's "shadow fleet," which transport oil through Denmark's complicated for navigation shipping straits, are increasingly opting to forego pilot services, raising the risk of an oil spill off the Danish coast, Bloomberg reported on September 10.

The shadow fleet consists of vessels with mysterious ownership used by Russia to obscure their transport of sanctioned Russian oil/wet cargo since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
