A new round of negotiations between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia is set to take place next week in either Switzerland or Turkey, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed, Hromadske reported on March 10.

The talks, originally planned for this week, were delayed after the US side proposed rescheduling them for next week due to evolving developments in the Middle East.

In a statement to journalists, Zelenskyy elaborated on the ongoing diplomatic efforts. “Negotiations were initially planned for Tuesday or Wednesday in Turkey. I had a conversation with President Erdogan, and for all of them, the war in the Middle East is also a challenge. However, everyone agrees that dialogue to end the war in Ukraine is crucial, and it remains a priority for all of us,” he said.

The trilateral discussions are now set for next week, with Switzerland or Turkey being the likely locations. The exact date will depend on the tensions in the Middle East. According to Zelenskyy, the key agenda items will include continuing prisoner exchanges and preparing for a possible meeting between the leaders involved. However, the president acknowledged that territorial issues may only be resolved through direct talks at the highest political level, he told Hromadske correspondent.

Zelenskyy also emphasized the importance of European involvement in the peace process. “Ukraine insists on Europe’s participation in the negotiations,” he said. “We have worked to ensure that European leaders are part of various negotiation formats, even when some partners did not support this configuration.”

Ukraine’s push for a stronger European role in the negotiations comes at a time when Russia has shown little willingness to engage in serious peace talks. Zelenskyy pointed out that Europe should be more proactive in driving these discussions, as Russia is unlikely to demonstrate a genuine interest in having Europe at the negotiating table.

In an earlier interview with Corriere della Sera, Zelenskyy had hoped that the US’s operations against Iran would not interfere with the planned negotiations, which had initially been expected to occur in Abu Dhabi. He had suggested that Geneva or other European cities could host the talks instead.

However, the ongoing military actions in the Middle East caused a change in plans, and the latest statements confirm that Ukraine has yet to receive any further indications regarding the trilateral talks.

As the crisis in the Middle East forces the US to delay critical peace negotiations, Ukraine is using the distraction to prove its strategic value to Washington.

Zelenskyy had previously confirmed that Ukrainian military experts are being deployed to Gulf states to help American forces counter Iranian Shahed drones. By directly assisting the US in neutralizing the same drone technology used by the Russian military, Ukraine is ensuring it remains a top security priority for Washington, even as global attention shifts to the Middle East.
