Trump Says Russia-Ukraine Negotiations to Start Immediately After Two-Hour Call With Putin

Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine will begin immediate ceasefire talks following a two-hour phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which he described as “excellent.”
US President Donald Trump announced on May 19 that his two-hour phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin went “very well” and that Russia and Ukraine would immediately begin negotiations toward a ceasefire and an end to the war.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social on May 19, Trump said the terms of the ceasefire would be negotiated directly by the two parties, as they “know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”
Trump described the tone and spirit of the conversation as “excellent” and noted Russia’s interest in “large-scale trade” with the United States after the war against Ukraine ends.
“There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is unlimited,” he said. He added that Ukraine could also benefit from trade during its rebuilding process.
According to Trump, he informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb of the developments during a call following his discussion with Putin.
Trump also mentioned that the Vatican, represented by the Pope, expressed interest in hosting the negotiations.
Earlier on May 19, Vladimir Putin held a press conference following a phone call with US President Donald Trump. The discussion centered on the possibility of resuming peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
