Russia is expected to use the BRICS summit as an opportunity to strengthen its military efforts in Ukraine, shows a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) posted on October 22.

According to ISW, “Russia is likely to use the BRICS summit as an opportunity to showcase its efforts to strengthen global ties with non-Western states and possibly forge agreements or create trade mechanisms that could support its military efforts in Ukraine while mitigating the effects of Western sanctions.”

The summit, taking place in Russian Kazan, gathered 36 world leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Taliban Minister of Industry and Trade Nuruddin Azizi, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Putin has already met with key leaders on the sidelines of the summit, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Modi once again pointed on the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to Russia’s war against Ukraine and reaffirmed India’s role as a potential mediator.

Earlier, Russian officials have advised international attendees to BRICS summit to carry cash, highlighting the difficulties arising from Western sanctions.
