Azerbaijan officially applied to join the BRICS group of developing economies, just a day after Vladimir Putin's visit to Azerbaijan aimed at strengthening regional relations and securing Moscow's trade routes.

On Tuesday, August 20, Aykhan Hajizade, spokesperson for Azerbaijan's foreign ministry, confirmed that the country is seeking membership in the BRICS bloc of nations.

BRICS operates as an organization aimed at enhancing economic cooperation among its member nations and boosting their global economic and political influence.

Originally established in 2009 to strengthen relations between Russia, China, India, and Brazil, the partnership has since expanded to include nine members: Iran, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia, and the UAE.

Business relations were a key focus during the meeting between Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday. Aliyev revealed that $120 million has been allocated to enhance cargo transport between the two nations.
