Russia Uses Cheap Drones to Detect Ukrainian Air Defense Systems

Authors

Russia has begun deploying new, inexpensive drones in its attacks on Ukraine to detect Ukrainian air defense systems and assess damage. These new drones, made from materials such as foam and plywood, have been used in attacks over the past two to three weeks, including a nighttime strike on July 26, according to Reuters, citing a statement from Andrii Cherniak, a representative of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine.

Cherniak reported that Russia is employing two types of new drones. One type is equipped with a camera and a SIM card from a Ukrainian mobile operator to send images back to Russian forces. These drones do not carry explosives but are similar to Shahed-type drones and usually fly in groups with them. The other type of drone carries no explosive payload or only a small charge and is used as a decoy.

Cherniak explained that these new drones help Russian troops identify the locations of Ukrainian mobile units and air defense systems, as they are difficult to distinguish from regular attack drones from the ground. Consequently, these drones also need to be shot down, which can reveal the locations of Ukrainian air defense systems.

The new drones are estimated to cost about $10,000 each, making them significantly cheaper to produce than air defense missiles. They are capable of flying at altitudes up to 1,000 meters, which helps them avoid being hit by machine guns and automatic rifles.
