Russian Court Treats Instagram Logo in WhatsApp Status as Extremist Symbolism

A court in Russia’s Dagestan region fined a local resident after treating an Instagram link in his WhatsApp account status as extremist symbolism, according to Verstka on April 4.
The outlet reported that the Derbent City Court ruled that the man had publicly displayed the symbols of an extremist organization after a link to an Instagram Reel, accompanied by the platform’s logo, appeared in the status section of his personal WhatsApp account. WhatsApp is also blocked in Russia.

According to the court decision cited by the outlet, the link was visible “in open access” and directed users to “instagram.com/reel/,” while also displaying the Instagram logo.
The material stated that Instagram had been recognized as an extremist organization, and the court treated the combination of the link and logo as a public display of banned symbols.
The link was reportedly identified by a local police officer during what the ruling described as internet monitoring. An “internet resource examination report” was drawn up on March 5, 2026, and the court later found the man guilty and fined him about $25, Verstka reported.

The case adds to a broader pattern in Russia of authorities using extremism laws to punish even low-level references to Meta-owned platforms after the company’s social networks were banned and branded extremist in the country.
The ruling also fits into a wider Russian push to punish not only extremist symbols, but the digital tools used to evade censorship.
Russia’s Digital Development Ministry is weighing fines and fees aimed at people using VPNs to bypass online blocks, following meetings with telecom operators and major internet companies on March 28.
Minister Maksut Shadaev did not rule out administrative liability for using circumvention tools, though he reportedly expressed hope that such penalties could still be avoided.
The talks also involved companies including VK, Ozon, Avito, Wildberries, and Yandex, while one source cited in the report said restrictions could begin on May 1.
