Russian Forces Execute Five Ukrainian Defenders in Captivity, Says Prosecutor General

Russian forces executed five Ukrainian defenders who were captured and unable to resist in the Huliaipole area, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General on November 27.

“On the morning of November 27, 2025, in the Huliaipole direction, Zaporizhzhia region, Russian soldiers cold-bloodedly shot our defenders who were in captivity,” the statement said.

A pre-trial investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war, along with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), has been initiated under the procedural supervision of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The Office of the Prosecutor General stressed that the deliberate killing of prisoners of war is a serious breach of the Geneva Conventions and constitutes a major international crime.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian prosecutors have initiated a criminal investigation into the alleged execution of five Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces during a recent attack in the Donetsk region.

The Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office stated that the incident took place on November 19 near Kotlyne in the Pokrovsk district. According to reports, Russian troops captured five unarmed Ukrainian soldiers during an assault on Ukrainian positions and then shot them.

Earlier, an article by the independent Russian outlet Verstka claimed that commanders in several Russian units on the Ukrainian front are executing their own soldiers without trial or coercing them into “suicide” missions if they refuse orders. The practice, which troops refer to as “obnulenie” (“nullification”) and “execution by attack.”
