Ukrainian prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the alleged execution of five Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces during a recent assault in the Donetsk region, according to official statements released on November 22.

The Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that the incident occurred on November 19 near the settlement of Kotlyne in the Pokrovsk district. During an assault on Ukrainian positions, Russian troops reportedly captured five unarmed Ukrainian servicemen and subsequently shot them.

According to the prosecutor’s office, drone footage recorded by Russian forces appears to show the prisoners lying face down on the ground before a Russian soldier opens fire with an automatic weapon. All five were killed on the spot.

Audio recorded in the video includes celebratory remarks from the Russian unit. One soldier is heard saying: “Fck, their heads just flew off — beautiful,” “For our boys,” “Take that, fckers.”

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine confirmed the launch of a pre-trial investigation under Article 438, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to violations of the laws and customs of war resulting in death. Investigators are working to identify those directly involved.

Prosecutors emphasized that the killing of prisoners of war constitutes a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions and is considered a serious international crime.

Earlier, Ukraine’s military intelligence intercepted a conversation in which a Colombian commander fighting for Russia ordered his unit to kill all civilians during low-visibility conditions, explicitly mentioning “women and children.”

The unit, part of Russia’s 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade, had already been implicated in civilian executions near Pokrovsk days prior, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate.
