Russian Troops Execute 5 Unarmed Ukrainian Soldiers in Zaporizhzhia Region
Russian troops executed five Ukrainian prisoners of war in Zaporizhzhia region.
According to preliminary information, on November 24, near the settlement of Novodaryvka in the Polohy district, Russian military personnel executed five out of six Ukrainian soldiers who had been taken prisoner, reports Office of the Prosecutor General.
Law enforcement authorities have identified the Russian military unit involved, and its servicemen are being investigated for their connection to this crime.
Investigators also have a video recording that captured the moment of the execution.
The Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal case on the violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The Office of the Prosecutor General emphasized that the killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a serious international crime.
In October, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported a rise in the executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian military forces. Their latest reports suggest that Russian commanders may be permitting, encouraging, or even directly ordering these acts.
Currently, Ukrainian law enforcement has information about the execution of 102 prisoners of war on the battlefield.
