Drone Attack Hits Kazan Aviation Plant, Targeting Russia’s Strategic Bombers Fleet
The Kazan Aviation Plant, located in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia, was reportedly targeted in a drone attack, Russian media outlet ASTRA reported on January 20.
This facility is known for producing and repairing strategic bombers, including the Tu-160 and Tu-22M3M, and is under international sanctions.
Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, confirmed reports of explosions in Kazan, stating, “Military facilities were attacked by unidentified drones.”
He added that Kazan is home to several critical aviation enterprises that play a key role in Russia’s military-industrial complex. Among them is the Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant, which not only manufactures strategic bombers like the Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 but also oversees their modernization and repair. The plant has been undergoing significant expansion to support its operations.
Another major enterprise in Kazan is the Kazan Helicopter Plant, which specializes in the production of military and civilian helicopters. The city also hosts the Kazan State Gunpowder Plant, which manufactures gunpowder and explosives for aviation munitions and missiles, including the Kalibr and Iskander systems.
Earlier, reports emerged that drones targeted an oil depot in the Tula region of Russia overnight on January 18.
