Russia launched a missile strike targeting a training facility of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, the Ukrainian military’s official command reported on July 29.

As of 9:30 p.m. local time, three Ukrainian servicemembers had been confirmed killed and 18 others injured. Emergency crews are currently operating at the site, and the wounded are receiving urgent medical care, officials said.

“Despite the security measures taken, unfortunately, we were not able to completely avoid casualties among our personnel,” Ukraine’s Ground Forces stated in an official release. “Relevant emergency services are working at the scene.”

The military has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the attack and the resulting casualties. A commission has been formed under the leadership of the Chief of the Military Law Enforcement Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“In the event it is established that the deaths and injuries were caused by the actions or negligence of any officials, those responsible will be held accountable,” the statement read.

Command officials expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and stressed that additional safety measures are being implemented across training ranges and military facilities.

“Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Ground Forces are taking further steps to protect the lives and health of military personnel during missile and air strikes by the aggressor on training grounds and education centers,” the military added.

Earlier, Ukraine officially observed the inaugural Day of Mourning and Remembrance for Defenders of Ukraine who died in Russian captivity on July 28.
