Russian Missile Strike on Sumy Injures at Least 90, Hits Hospital and School

On March 24, a Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s northeastern city of Sumy hit an industrial facility, damaging nearby residential areas, a hospital, and a school, and injuring at least 90 civilians, including 19 children, according to local officials.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar reported the strike, though he did not specify the targeted facility. Governor Volodymyr Artiukh, speaking from the site in a video, said children were in a shelter at the time of the strike.
Footage showed heavy smoke, fires, and shattered windows in nearby vehicles, with smoke rising from the upper floors of a five-story residential building. Sumy, located about 30 kilometers from the Russian border, faces frequent drone and missile attacks. Emergency services continue assessing the damage and assisting those affected.
Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the European Union must play a leading role in establishing security guarantees for Ukraine. In an interview with The New York Times published on March 23, he warned that any peace deal without such measures would leave Ukraine exposed to future Russian aggression.
