Russian Oil Giant in Flames: Lukoil’s Key Volgograd Plant Hit by Massive Drone Assault

A major fire broke out at the Lukoil oil refinery in Russia’s Volgograd after a drone strike overnight, Russian media ASTRA reported on August 14.
Regional governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed the refinery was hit, saying the incident occurred during a recent large-scale drone attack.

Eyewitnesses said that explosions began after 2:30 a.m., with some of the loudest blasts reported in the city’s Krasnoarmeysky district. Residents said they heard at least five to seven powerful detonations. One downed drone reportedly caused debris to crash into a residential area, sparking a fire and heavy smoke.
The target was later identified as the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka plant—the largest oil refinery in Russia’s Southern Federal District, with an annual capacity of 14.8 million tons. The facility sits about 475 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.

Bocharov said the strike triggered fuel spills and fires at the site, but added, “Fire crews quickly began extinguishing the blaze. According to preliminary data, there are no casualties.”
Photos, videos, and NASA FIRMS satellite heat maps confirmed a significant fire at the refinery. OSINT project Exilenova+ claimed multiple drones scored direct hits on the facility.
At around 11:29 p.m., Volgograd Airport implemented the “Cover” security protocol, temporarily halting all arrivals and departures.
Earlier, drones struck the Unecha linear production and dispatch station, part of the Russian Druzhba oil pipeline network.
