Türkiye stated that it had discovered a Russian-origin Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle in the northwestern province of Kocaeli and launched an investigation into how it ended up there, according to Reuters on December 19.

Türkiye’s Interior Ministry stated that initial assessments indicated the drone had been used for reconnaissance and surveillance, following its discovery in a rural area of Izmit’s Çubuklubala neighborhood.

Images published by Turkish outlets showed what appeared to be Russian military markings on parts of the aircraft, prompting security teams to be dispatched to secure the site and initiate technical examinations.

A local resident told Daily Sabah he saw the aircraft come down days earlier but stayed away. “I was afraid to get close to it,” the resident said. The Çubuklubala neighborhood headman, Muharrem Kaymaz, said the witness did not approach the object at first “because he was scared and thought its owner might come and take it.”

Earlier, it was reported that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan briefed Ukraine on his recent visit to Moscow and reaffirmed Türkiye’s role in peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow.
