In schools across Russia and the self-proclaimed “Luhansk People’s Republic”, “lessons of courage” were held, during which children were taught about the return of the city of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region under Russian control, which was compared to the liberation of Budapest by the Red Army.

Verstka reported on March 25 that reports on school pages on the VKontakte social media platform show that the return of Sudzha was compared in some lessons to the liberation of Budapest by the Red Army during World War II.

The director of the Air Defense Forces Museum, Yuri Knutov, addressed students from Balashikha and the temporarily occupied Luhansk region via video link. He spoke to them about the “liberation of Budapest in 1944 and the operation to return Sudzha.”

“Specifically, the participants learned how Budapest was liberated in 1944 through underground pipes, and how in 2025, Russian soldiers freed Sudzha from Ukrainian occupiers,” reads the publication from the Pervalsk boarding school.

On March 8, Ukrainian Airborne Assault Forces reported successfully intercepting Russian special forces attempting to approach Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region via the Urengoy–Pomary–Uzhhorod gas pipeline.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated on March 14 that Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from the city of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region to take up more strategically advantageous positions along the eastern border of Ukraine.

In the summer of 2024, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukrainian Defense Forces launched the Kursk incursion as a preemptive measure in order to disrupt Russian plans to capture Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Sumy regions.
