Major power outages affected the southern Ukrainian city of Dnipro and several other communities across Dnipropetrovsk region, with nearly the entire city of Dnipro losing electricity after a Russian strike on energy infrastructure, according to local media on January 7.

Local residents reported widespread disruptions, including water supply issues, mobile communication failures, and a halt to metro operations.

“This evening, Russian troops launched another attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. As a result of the attack, the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions are almost completely without power. Critical infrastructure is operating on backup power,” Ukrainian Ministry of Energy wrote.

No timeline for the restoration of power has been provided, according to Mykola Lukashuk, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council.

Power outages were also reported in Zaporizhzhia, though critical infrastructure, including water systems and hospitals, has switched to backup generators, according to Kyiv Independent.

Earlier in the day, sustained Russian strikes were reported in Kryvyi Rih, also in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least eight people were injured in the attacks.

Previously, it was reported that Russia launched another attack against two ports in the southern Ukrainian Black Sea port city of Odesa, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to at least five others, according to Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine.

The attack caused significant damage to port facilities, including administrative buildings and containers filled with oil.
