Algeria has likely begun operating Russia’s export-variant Su-57E fifth-generation fighter jet, potentially becoming the first foreign customer to receive the aircraft.

According to Clash Report, footage published on social media shows a Su-57-type aircraft flying over Algerian territory, accompanied by Su-35 jets painted in Algerian Air Force colors. The outlet reported that the flight was observed during what appeared to be a test or familiarization sortie.

The video shows a stealth fighter consistent in shape and configuration with the Su-57. The surrounding terrain and desert landscape suggest the footage was filmed in North Africa.

The aircraft’s external features match those of Russia’s Su-57, indicating that the jet is likely already conducting flights in Algerian airspace.

Algeria previously signed contracts with Russia covering several combat aircraft types, including Su-34MEs, Su-35s, and the Su-57E. Algeria officially confirmed the Su-57E purchase in 2024, making it the first export customer for Russia’s fifth-generation fighter.

Details of the deal have remained limited. Reports dating back to 2019 indicated negotiations for up to 14 Su-57E aircraft, with an estimated contract value of around $2 billion. Implementation was reportedly delayed for several years due to production constraints in Russia and the need to adapt avionics and onboard systems to the customer’s requirements.

Earlier, In 2025, United Aircraft Corporation CEO Vadim Badekha said on Russian television that two aircraft had been handed over without disclosing the recipient. The recent sighting over Algeria suggests those deliveries may have been made to the Algerian Air Force.

In parallel, Algeria has been upgrading infrastructure at several air bases, including the construction of hardened aircraft shelters, and has reportedly conducted pilot training in Russia under conditions of limited public disclosure.
