A Russian officer commanding a drone unit has died in Russia’s Kursk region under unclear circumstances, according to the OSINT group KilledInUkraine on April 7.

Lt. Vyacheslav Parkhatskikh, who led a UAV company within the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade, was reportedly killed on March 25.

The circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed.

Units of this type play a critical role on the battlefield, conducting aerial reconnaissance, identifying enemy positions and equipment, monitoring troop movements, and directing artillery fire or adjusting strikes.

KilledInUkraine, a research group focused on documenting confirmed losses among Russian officers, said the officer’s death was verified through open-source data.

The group also pointed to earlier findings by InformNapalm, which in 2022 identified Parkhatskikh as a serviceman in Russia’s 417th Reconnaissance Battalion. At the time, he was listed as a gunner in a reconnaissance unit.

According to InformNapalm, elements of that battalion were deployed as part of a battalion tactical group that crossed into Ukraine from occupied Crimea on February 24, 2022, advancing toward the Kherson region.

That unit later engaged Ukrainian forces and suffered significant losses near the city of Oleshky during its advance.

Earlier, Major General Volodymyr Lyapkin, a former high-ranking official in the Security Service of Ukraine who defected to Russia following the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, was killed in action while fighting against Ukrainian forces.
