Kremlin Braces for Escalated Drone Strikes With Netting Around Moscow Power Substation

Moscow authorities have begun constructing protective metal anti-drone frameworks around the Abramovo electrical substation in the city’s eastern district, The Moscow Times reported on August 31.

Verified footage shows construction crews assembling steel supports, which analysts at the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) noted will serve as a frame to hold anti-drone netting just 350 meters from the Izmailovo Kremlin. The 7.5-billion-ruble ($86.9 million) facility is a vital node in Moscow’s municipal power grid, supplying electricity to metro lines, the Moscow City Court, Lokomotiv Stadium, and critical district infrastructure.

This push to secure Moscow’s electrical infrastructure occurs against the backdrop of escalating Ukrainian strikes on broader Russian energy targets. At least 21 drone attacks on refineries in August reportedly drove Russian crude processing to near a 20-year low and reduced domestic gasoline deliveries by nearly 20 percent year-on-year, resulting in fuel shortages and gas station queues across the capital.

The decision to erect physical barriers follows an escalation in Ukrainian long-range drone operations. Citing statements from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, The Moscow Times reported that more than 2,600 drones were launched toward the city between August 15 and August 22 alone.

In response to persistent Russian bombardments of Ukrainian civilian sites, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently instructed military leadership to scale up deep-tier drone operations from 300 to 1,000 launches per day while accelerating domestic interceptor drone production.

In preparation for anticipated winter attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid, Finland is readying a critical air defense package to protect Ukrainian airspace. Finnish President Alexander Stubb had previously stated that Helsinki will transfer additional defense capabilities from its remaining stocks, though he declined to specify the exact equipment.

Stubb emphasized the urgent need for international partners to secure additional interceptor missiles, such as Patriots, alongside generators and diesel engines to sustain Ukraine’s power infrastructure through the colder months.
