Russian Drone Attack on Kherson Destroys $626,000 in Red Cross Humanitarian Aid

A Russian drone attack on Kherson sparked a fire at a Ukrainian Red Cross warehouse on the evening of August 23, destroying and damaging humanitarian supplies worth nearly UAH 28 million (around $626,000).

According to the Ukrainian Red Cross on August 24, the warehouse contained equipment and materials intended to help communities prepare for the upcoming autumn and winter period, as well as emergency supplies used to respond to the consequences of Russian attacks.

Among the items stored at the facility were materials for temporarily covering and protecting buildings damaged by strikes, along with medical supplies, blankets, hygiene kits, and equipment used to provide water and electricity.

The fire destroyed or damaged humanitarian aid stored at the warehouse, with the total losses estimated at nearly UAH 28 million (about $626,000).

No Ukrainian Red Cross employees or volunteers were injured in the attack.

According to the organisation, despite the loss of humanitarian supplies, the organization said it continues to operate in Kherson and the surrounding region. Its teams remain engaged in responding to the aftermath of attacks and providing assistance to residents in need.

The strike follows another recent attack on humanitarian infrastructure in Ukraine. On August 7, a World Health Organization (WHO) humanitarian warehouse in Dnipro was destroyed in a Russian strike, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Earlier that day, a WHO staff member and several drivers had been working at the facility to evacuate humanitarian supplies. The team managed to remove 130 of approximately 300 pallets stored at the warehouse before leaving the area ahead of the attack.
