Finland Prepares Major Air Defense Support for Ukraine Ahead of Winter Russian Attacks

Finland is preparing to significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities as Kyiv braces for another winter of Russian attacks, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in an interview with We—Ukraine on August 26.
Speaking to Ukrainian media, Stubb said protecting Ukraine’s airspace should remain a key priority for Kyiv’s international partners, particularly as Russia continues to threaten the country’s energy infrastructure.

The Finnish president said he had already discussed additional air defense support with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Stubb said Finland would provide Ukraine with additional critical air defense capabilities from its remaining stocks, although he declined to specify what equipment would be transferred. He stressed the urgency of strengthening Ukraine’s defenses ahead of the approaching winter.
According to him, Ukraine’s partners must focus not only on strengthening its air defenses but also on helping protect and sustain the country’s energy system. He highlighted the need for additional generators and diesel engines as part of preparations for the colder months.

Stubb also pointed to Russia’s capacity to manufacture ballistic missiles, underscoring the need to secure additional interceptor missiles for Ukraine. He said efforts to locate available interceptors for Ukrainian forces are continuing internationally.
He added that Patriot systems are available in several parts of the world, including Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, adding that Ukraine’s partners are continuing to explore multiple options for securing additional air defense capabilities.

The comments come as Ukraine continues to secure additional air defense equipment and ammunition from its international partners. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis in Kyiv that Ukraine had recently received additional Patriot interceptor missiles, several Crotale air defense systems with accompanying missiles, and AIM missiles.
Zelenskyy said an undisclosed partner had confirmed the transfer of several Crotale systems and missiles, while Ukraine had also received AIM missiles used to intercept Russian aerial threats.
